My 1st Foodie Penpals Reveal!

Last month I shared with you that I would be participating in Foodie Penpals. Foodie Penpals is a program that Lindsay from The Lean Bean Green created in 2011. The program has grown from 30 participants in September 2011 to currently more than 600!!! How incredible is that?!!?

Cliff's Notes version of  the program is -  you receive a name from Lindsay on the 5th of the month. You contact the person to find out if they have any food allergies, dietary restrictions, etc. The dollar limit is $15 and you have until the 15th of the month to get your box of goodies together. On the last day of the month, you reveal what you received. Got all that?!?! :) For the official description of the program and sign up if you're interested, head over to the Foodie Penpals page!

The Lean Green Bean

I received my first box of goodies from Cristina at An Organic Wife. Cristina is 25 years old and about two years ago, made the switch to eating organic. The following quote is from her website, "All of our meat and dairy is locally sourced from grass-fed farms. I make everything from scratch, using no additives, artificial preservatives, or colors."

After "meeting" Cristina, I've started following her blog and it's such a great read. You guys have to check her out!

My box of goodies before I tore into it!
Since I'm currently prepping, I had to be a bit more selective with the things I could receive in my box. Cristina didn't seem to mind my list of boring things I could have and really hooked me up!!!

The spread including a handwritten card from Cristina!
I oohed and ahhed at every piece of yummy goodness that was in the box! Some of the goodies Cristina sent me included 365 Organic's German Mustard, Justin's Chocolate Peanut Butter, Zhena's Gypsy Tea in Vanilla Chai, and Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce.

I have a new favorite meal and addiction. Cristina created a monster! Here's what you need:

The salmon comes out spicy, salty, and oh so tasty. Salmon plus veggies has been my last meal of the day for the past few weeks and since making it with these three ingredients, I could NOT wait until the end of the day when it was time to grub on it. I will let you know that my heart is a bit broken because my diet just changed and my sauce has been taken away from me :( I believe my reply when I was told that I had to give it up was something along the lines of "NOOOOOOOO!!!!"

Have no fear, Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce. We will be reunited soon!

Meal #2 - Cinnamon Ezekial bread & cashew butter
You will hear many competitors rave about almond butter and while you will never catch me turning down any type of nut butter, you will not hear me proclaiming my love for almond butter. You will, however, hear me declaring my undying love for Artisana's 100% Organic Raw Cashew Butter!!! This stuff is no joke!!!

Don't get between me & my cashew butter!
I literally caught myself licking the inside of the packaging just to ensure I had eaten every little bit. I sent The Boss #1 a picture of the empty cashew butter packaging and said, "You need to get this in your life. This shit cray!"

The German mustard from 365 Organic was the perfect dressing for my 5 oz chicken + 1 cup salad + kalamata olives meal. I had to remind myself that if I used all of the mustard at once, I wouldn't have any for my next salad. The mustard tastes a bit like spicy brown mustard but less tart. I highly recommend it!

There you have it, some of the delicious goodies Cristina from An Organic Wife brought into my life! Thank you so much, Cristina!! You have made me & my tummy so very very happy!!

If you're interested in seeing what I sent my foodie penpal, head over to Raven's blog Surely There's An Instruction Manual!

The Moments I Live For...

The moments I live for have nothing to do with figure competitions. They don't have a thing to do with trophies or top 5 placings.

The moments I live for center around one of the greatest gifts I have ever been given - The Princess!

Daddy's Girl!

Look at that face!

Tuesday night, Tom and I attended "Meet the Author" night at our daughter's school. The Princess, along with the other fifth-graders at her school have been working on a writing project. They were asked to write the story of their life and illustrate it. Once they completed their story, it was send away to be printed and bound.

Meet the Author night was the first time the students and their families saw their published books. Each family brought a dessert to share and students were invited to read portions of their book.

Tom and our published author!

My little lady and I!
I'm many things but what I'm most proud of is being a mom!! These type of events just confirm to me that while I never thought motherhood was for me, God knew more than I did! The Princess is such a great kid and we are so blessed!!

My crazy cute fam bam!!

The story of her life
P.S. The great thing about having a published author in the family is finally getting my husband to read ;)

New Release Tuesday

Awhile back, one of my friends posted this video on their facebook page and I was so impressed.

Well, Karmin has a new single out entitled "Brokenhearted" and here's the thing, I had heard it on the radio a few times and loved it. The only issue was each time I heard it, it was towards the end of the song and I had missed the deejay saying who the song was by. I was frustrated because I really liked the song but had no clue who sang it!! Last week, I finally caught the song from the beginning and scurried to youtube to find the video!

I present to you - Karmin and "Brokenhearted"!

Time to Mark the Calendar!!!

I have a secret to share with you.

I've actually been prepping for my first show for the past 7 weeks but very few people knew! I know...I know...that wasn't very nice of me since a large portion of my blog is about prepping and living as a wife/mom/librarian by day and figure competitor by night :) I guess I just wanted to ease back into things and just concentrate on starting this prep out on the right foot and getting into the right mindset.

I apologize and promise to never keep secrets from you again.....forgive me?? :)

The plan is to do both of these shows which are a week apart. You may recall that I did the Terminator show last year and placed second. If you want to relive my "hometown glory" as I called it, you can read part 1 and part 2 of my recap from that particular show. This will be my first time doing two shows a week apart so I'm crossing my fingers that all will work. Boss #1 and Boss #2 do not seem worried so I'm not going to be :)

So, it's 12 weeks until I hit the stage for the first time this year and here's where I'm currently at...it's not the best picture but it gives you an idea of where I stand...

12 weeks....that's a long time in theory but I know it will go by quickly....I need to be focused & determined. I need to walk away from both shows with a top 3 placing - I won't settle for anything less.

It's time to stop playing. It's time to go big or go home.

"Ain't nuthin' to it but to do it!"

Avoidance at the Gym

A couple of weeks ago, I told you guys that I wanted to blog about a post I had read over at Sweat Like A Pig. Well, it looks like today is the day!! :)

The post is entitled "How to Avoid Being Hit On in the Gym" and in the post, Tara talks about her experiences with being hit on while trying to work out and provides tips on how to avoid having guys hit on you while you're trying to throw some iron around ;)

I'm going to be completely honest here - I've never been hit on while I've been at the gym - never!! I mean, if you were a guy, would you want to hit a woman who looks like this when she works out?!?!?

I promise I'm not about to poop despite the face I'm making!!

Or this?!?!?

In reading the advice that Tara gives, I found it interesting that I did some of the things she recommended but not with the intent of not getting hit on. For example, she advises the reader to wear headphones because "Instead of starting a conversation with you, guys will just nod, smile and move on." I never ever go to the gym without my headphones!!! One reason is, I can't stand the music that they play at the gym so I need my own...lol!! And just like Tara stated in her post, I use them as a way to avoid conversation with males and/or females because the gym is work to me. I'm on a tight schedule and I want to handle my business quickly & efficiently. It's not that I don't like the people who go to my gym because I do! I just don't want conversations to interfere with the work that I need to get done. Oh...and just to prove that it's not just strangers that I don't talk to at the gym...I don't even talk to Tom when we work out together...we'll talk in the car and while we're walking into the gym but once we scan our gym ids, conversation stops. He will use hand signals or demonstrate the move he wants me to and once in awhile, he'll pull one of my earbuds out to explain something to me but that's very very rare!

Another piece of advice Tara gives in her post is, "Don't be afraid to grunt". She mentions the quote that talks about if you're attractive while you're working out, then you're working hard enough. When I hit the gym, I look like a dude - no joke! Half the time I don't comb my hair so I throw on a hat...I don't have a lick of makeup on...and I may or may not have a small pair of earrings on.

I'm not afraid to grunt or make noise when I'm lifting. I'm not afraid to sweat and make faces. I'm not at the gym to be cute. I'm at the gym to show the weight who's da boss!! I'm not afraid of people thinking "She's a sweaty, nasty, ugly mess!" as they see me moving from exercise to another. Don't believe me?? I think picture below is proof enough :)

Stinky, sweaty, and I didn't comb my hair!
This piece of advice reminds me of this picture I saw & saved from pinterest some time ago.

Amen!
If I could give one piece of advice about being hit on at the gym, it would be to work out with your significant other. Men will be less likely to approach you if your boyfriend, husband, etc is with you. In all of the time that Tom and I have been in a relationship, I've never had a man try to hit on me while Tom was with me. I mean, if you were a guy, would you think you had a chance with me when I have this man on my arm?!?!? (unless you're Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson or Shemar Moore or Phil Heath..then you definitely have a chance..lol!)

Anyone else have advice about how to avoid getting hit on at the gym? What about keeping chatty folks from interrupting your workout?

I Wanna Be Like Dwight!!

Last Monday was my day to create Dwight Howard Baby Boulders as I like to call them :) As you may recall, I'm on a mission to have shoulders like the ones in this picture or this picture. I'm not quite at Dwight's level by I'm definitely making progress!

Tom shot a video of last Monday's shoulder workout and I want to give you a little background about what's going on in the video before you view it.

As most of you know, Tom creates my workouts and this was one of his more brutal creations :) He wanted to incorporate a lot of mid-delts by using supersets and dropsets. The idea was to create separation but also tie in pre-exhausting the delts. You will see me posing at the end of some of the sets. I was doing this to help feel the exact muscles I had just worked on and recognize what muscles I want to pop while I'm on stage - mind/muscle connection, baby!!

The workout consists of the following:

Superset #1 - Lateral raises --> Upright rows
Superset #2 - Military press --> Bent-over raises
LifeFitness Rear Delt machine
LifeFitness Lateral Raise machine
Kettlebell Front Raises (in squat position)

I hope you enjoy the video and I want you to know...the comment about Zumba....all Tom...he's such a smartass ;)

In My Reading Bag

It's no secret that I love to read. I mean, I dedicated a whole blog post to my first true love, books :) Contrary to popular belief, librarians do not sit at the branch's reference desk and read all day. My day usually consists of working the desks, answering phones, researching information for reference questions, and assisting with workshops. I usually get my reading in while I'm on a piece of cardio equipment, during my lunch break, or right before I go bed..very rarely does it actually take place inside the library :)

I thought I would share with you some of the books I've read recently. While I tend to gravitate towards fiction and mystery, I'm trying to explore other genres.

source

Our library system has a blog entitled "Ravenous Readers" and one of the staff wrote about this particular book. It sounded intriguing so I put a copy on reserve and had to wait about 2 weeks before it arrived.  Let me tell you, it was totally worth the wait!!! The story is set in time when men die at the age of 25 and women die at 20. Girls are kidnapped and married off to rich men to help repopulate the world. This book focuses on  Rhine, who has been kidnapped and how she deals with the marriage she has been forced into.Click here to read an excerpt from Wither. As soon as I finished it, I put the next book in the series on hold. It's called Fever and you can read an excerpt from the author's website here.

source
Here's something you should know about me - in my eyes, Robert Crais can do no wrong! I have loved this author since the first time I read one of his books (it was The Watchman, in case you were wondering!). Joe Pike is the man of my dreams (don't worry...Tom is ok with it...lol) and I love any book in the series where he is featured prominently! Robert Crais does not churn out books so you have to wait usually about a year between books. I get antsy...I finish the latest book and I'm ready for the next week one...I start whining...I complain...I go back & re-read...I complain some more...it's a vicious cycle! Anywho, Taken is about a girl and her boyfriend that are kidnapped by bajadores and follows Elvis & Joe as they attempt to rescue them. You can read more about the book on Robert Crais' website. I highly recommend this series and all of the other books written by him.

source
I began reading Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series when I was in high school. I was intrigued by all things criminal justice and this series about a medical examiner & her police lieutenant partner grabbed me instantly. Over the past few years, I have not loved the Scarpetta books that have been published. They just didn't hold my attention like the earlier books in the series did. It got to the point where I knew new books were being published and yet, I made no attempt to read them. When I saw a copy of Red Mist sitting on the Express shelf at my branch, I picked it up but debated for about 20 minutes about actually checking it out. I bit the bullet, checked it out, and I'm so happy that I did! It was like being reunited with a long lost friend. As I was reading it, I was reminded of why I feel in love with this character and series. You can read a brief summary about the book on the publisher's website.

Here's a list of books I have currently checked out but haven't read or finished reading:

These Things Hidden by Heather Gudenkauf
Letter from a Stranger by Barbara Taylor Bradford
At Hell's Gate by Ethan Black

What about you? What have you read recently or are currently reading? Any book recommendations for me??

New Release Tuesday

Do you guys remember the song "Show Me Love"? Even though I wasn't supposed to listen to secular music (I grew up in a Christian household), I would turn on my radio really really low and listen to a local radio station that played this song. I pictured myself on stage with Robyn, both of us dancing & singing our hearts out!

Onto the present, Robyn is back and I still love her! Thanks to Liz over at Just Another Rep for posting this video on her blog a couple of weeks ago. On a side note, I must proclaim my love for Liz's beautiful red hair and freckles publicly! From the moment, I saw the movie "Annie" I've wanted red hair & freckles. #truth #notajoke

Now to the music - enjoy "Hang With Me" by Robyn!

It's Kelly's birthday!!! If you don't know who Kelly is, have you been living under a rock!??!?! Kelly is one of the driving forces behind FitFluential and she writes a funny, motivating blog which you can find here.

In honor of Kelly and her birthday, I would like to present her with the following gifts.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to fulfill all of
her sinful, unclean thoughts.

he's more than just a pretty face and that
he would like you to crush him, just
like you do your workouts ;)

Last but certainly not least, LL Cool J! He heard
that you've been working on your core and wants
to play "I'll show you my core
